Welcome to Canada, Lykkers!
Are you eager to embark on the most unforgettable adventure along the West Coast Trail in Canada, where rugged beauty meets untamed wilderness?
Nestled on the edge of Vancouver Island, this legendary 75-kilometer trail promises a hiking experience like no other. From towering old-growth forests to stunning coastal vistas, prepare to be awe-struck at every turn!

Getting Started: Planning Your Adventure

Before you lace up your boots, planning is key. The trail is typically open from May 1 to September 30, and reservations are essential. Due to its popularity and the desire to preserve the natural environment, Parks Canada limits the number of hikers each day. Secure your spot early, and make sure you're prepared for the physical demands of the trail.
Shuttle services: Shuttle services are available to assist hikers in accessing various points along the West Coast Trail. You can use either private shuttle companies (Gordon River or Pachena Bay) or Parks Canada shuttle service, both for a fee and must be booked in advance.
Trailhead: Gordon River (Northern trailhead) and Pachena Bay (Southern trailhead).

Fees

Park Entry Fees: Entry fee for Pacific Rim National Park Reserve (which includes access to the West Coast Trail) is approximately CAD 10 per adult for a day pass.
Permits: Approximately CAD 127.50 per person (for adults) for the entire trail.
Booking Period: The reservation period typically opens in early January for the upcoming hiking season.

Popular Sections

Created to rescue shipwreck survivors, the full trail is 75 kilometers, but it can easily be divided into shorter trails to enjoy more comfortably, here 3 of the most popular sections:
1. Gordon River to Thrasher Cove (5 km):
You can access it via a ferry or boat, which is organized by a separate local service or as part of a hiking tour package. Once at Gordon River, enjoy a challenging hike from the lush rainforest to the serene beach at Thrasher Cove. Expect steep, challenging ascents and descents through dense rainforest, with roots and mud to navigate.
Duration: 1 day
2. Thrasher Cove to Camper Bay (8 km):
Hike through lush forests and along rocky shores, be sure to watch for Owen Point with its sea caves and tide pools. The trail to Camper Bay is challenging, but the campsite offers a beautiful beach setting. Expect tough climbs, muddy sections, and ladders.
Duration: 1-2 days
3. Carmanah Lighthouse to Cribs Creek (5 km):
The section from Carmanah Lighthouse to Cribs Creek is one of the more accessible and scenic parts of the West Coast Trail. It offers a blend of coastal and forest scenery, providing a good mix of the trail's highlights without some of the more strenuous challenges found in other sections. Expect a coastal view, lush, old-growth forest trails, wooden boardwalks and some ladders, and some comfortable beach walking (be aware of the tide schedule to avoid being caught by rising waters!).
Duration: 1 day

Tips for a Successful Hike

Permits and Reservations: Even for partial hikes, you still need to obtain a permit from Parks Canada. Make sure to book in advance, as there are daily limits on the number of hikers allowed on the trail.
Transport Logistics: Arranging transportation can be tricky for section hikes. Consider the logistics of getting to and from your starting and ending points. Shuttle services are available but should be booked ahead of time.
Stay Safe: Familiarize yourself with the tide charts and bear safety guidelines. The coastal trail is stunning but demands respect and caution.
Pace Yourself: This is not a race. Take time to enjoy the scenery, the wildlife, and the camaraderie with fellow hikers.
Leave No Trace: Preserve the trail's pristine condition for future adventurers. Pack out all your trash and be mindful of the environment.
You'll challenge your limits, connect with nature in its rawest form, and forge memories that will last a lifetime. So, what are you waiting for? Strap on your backpack, take a deep breath, and step into the wild. The West Coast Trail awaits, ready to show you the untamed beauty of Canada's rugged coastline. Happy hiking!
